Asian Paddle Crab

Scientific NameCharybdis japonica
The Asian Paddle Crab is widespread in the Hauraki Gulf. It has been detected in the Whangarei Harbour
and Opua/Waitangi in Northland.
Their colour ranges from off-white and pale green, through olive-green to a deep chestnut brown
with purplish markings.
They are strong swimmers and can spread to fouling on boats hull.

Impact 
  • Highly detrimental to shellfish aquaculture
  • Aggressive predator
  • Displaces native and fisheries species
