Mediterranean Fanworm

Scientific NameSabella spallanzanii

The Mediterranean Fanworm is an unwanted pest that has become established in Waitemata Harbour,
inner Hauraki Gulf in Auckland, Tutukaka, Whangarei, Coromandel, Tauranga, Gisborne,
Nelson harbours, Picton and Lyttelton Port.
It has a single spiral crown of elongated filaments projecting from tube. Spiral appears yellow-orange,
made of bands of white, yellow and brown.

Impact
  • Fouls boats, aquaculture and marine structures
