Restoring Kawau Island

Targeted toxin for pest animals

A major restoration effort is underway to remove browsing pests, specifically wallabies and possums, from Kawau Island.
This first phase of the programme is led by Auckland Council in partnership with Manuhiri Kaitiaki Charitable Trust, Department of Conservation, and actively engages the island's community.

The goal is to restore native forest regeneration, protect indigenous plants and wildlife, including kiwi, wekā, pāteke, kākā, reduce erosion and fire risk, and make Kawau one of New Zealand's largest inhabited pest-free islands.

If you have seen any recent possum or wallaby activity, please let us know by email kawau@islandconservation.org
