Maori Name: Tuangi | Scientific Name: Austrovenus stutchburyi

Cockles play a key role in estuarine ecosystems. They provide a valuable food source
for birds and fish, such as oystercatchers and eagle rays. They can filter many thousands of litres of
water per tidal cycle. 35mm in length are considered large in the North Island estuaries and in the
South Island they can grow to about 60mm.
