Gurnard are found widspread throughout New Zealand on sandy shell seabeds.
Auckland's great spots are the Manukau and Kaipara harbours, especially in mid-winter
when most of the snapper have moved out and gurnard move in.
Hawke’s Bay area is a perfect habitat.
